Contraband Trailer

I've said time and time again that I like a good old fashioned action thriller. Something to get my teeth into as well as mindless action and throwaway one liners.

Well the trailer for Mark Wahlberg's new movie, Contraband, has landed and it looks like it could deliver everything I want.

I'm still not sold on the Paranormal Activity franchise. The first was, well, okay I guess - certainly not scary - and the second was one of the most boring films I've ever seen. And not scary.

So here's number three. Have they learned anything? Well the trailer makes it look like there could be a lot more action then the previous two .... but...

Sometimes judging sentiment can be a hard thing. If you go too far the end product can feel manipulative but get it just right and your're onto a winner.

Well the trailer for Extremely Loud and Incredibly loss currently sits in the middle of the above. We have a dead father, a broken hearted mother and 9/11 all pivoted on one small boy. I'm already welling up.

They've been teasing us for some time about the plot details for Prometheus, Ridley Scott's Alien follow up, but now the studio have released the official details.

I posted a story about a supposed plot leak a few months back but this, as far as most people are aware, is now the real deal.

So here goes:

The BFG Movie

If, like me, your childhood book of choice was any by Roald Dahl then this story may be of interest. If you didn't read as a child, well your probably too busy drinking White Lightning to read this.

There's been a plethora of Dahl adaptations, from Charlie And The Chocolate Factory to Fantastic Mr Fox but, apart from a cartoon back in the late eighties, we've not seen the BFG on the big screen.

Dr Sleep - The Shining Sequel

Although this story isn't strictly movie news it does have a tenuous link to Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece The Shining.

It would appear that Stephen King has started work on a sequel to his novel The Shining entitled Dr Sleep. And you'll never guess what it's about.

Plot
A teen gang in South London defend their block from an alien invasion.

Review
On paper, Attack The Block should be a film that I'd enjoy. A film that gives little nods and winks to classics like Aliens, The Thing, Predator and, to an extent, Critters.

Bit of an oddity this one. I'm not sure whether not to slap a spoiler alert on this post due to the content of the Man On A Ledge trailer. It does seem to give a lot away - so yeah - possible spoilers ahead.

There's a pretty decent cast on offer here, although Elizabeth Banks seems to be a little mis-cast in her role. Never-the-less this could be a decent little thriller.

I have to admit to being pretty clueless about Dark Shadows. I know nothing about the TV show and had no idea what it was all about. I'd heard Tim Burton and Johnny Depp were involved but remained pretty ignorant.

Anyway, a few pictures have cropped up (curtsey of Empireonline) so I thought I'd look into this further. Turns out that this could actually be pretty good.

John Dies At The End Trailer

Don Coscarelli. That name might not mean much to many people but to me he's the genius behind the Phantasm movies and of course Bubba Ho-Tep.

Well since Ho-Tep he's pretty much been off the radar, but now he's back with the strangest looking film I've seen in quite a while John Dies At The End.

I'm not a fan of rebooting Robocop. I feel the sequels to the excellent original diluted everything that made the first great and turned the franchise into a kid-friendly shambles. Don't get me started on Robocop 3 and the flying.

Some would say then that it's ripe for a remake, to make it what it once was, an uber violent vision of the future. I accept that, except they won't make it that way. Here's why.

I've stayed away from a lot of the Dark Knight Rises leaks. This is mostly down to countless spoilers being revealed and the fact that they'd take something away from the finished film.

However, I don't see any reason not to post a picture of Anne Hathaway in full her full Catwoman outfit as it'll probably appear on a poster in the not too distance future anyway.

Scarface Remake

Yes I know that the Brian De Palma's Scarface was a remake, but lets be fair, the original Scarface could hardly be considered a classic. De Palma's on the other hand is without a doubt a defining moment in cinema history.

So, just like many more stories before this, it pains me to say that a remake is on the way. Yes, the powers that be have decided that what the movie world needs right now is a Scarface remake.

As we've reviewed on this site, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a classic. It's a brilliantly layered film with amazing characters that pull no punches. So is there any reason for it to be remade?

My normal response would be a definitive no. I wouldn't even have to think about that response, the 'no' would be out of my mouth as soon as the word remake had left your lips. But I've now seen two trailers. So is my response the same?

Review: Jonah Hex (12A) ★

Plot
The U.S. military makes a scarred bounty hunter with warrants on his own head an offer he cannot refuse: in exchange for his freedom, he must stop a terrorist who is ready to unleash Hell on Earth.

The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

Review
There are some films I just shouldn't like. They go against my whole perception of what a good, enjoyable film should be.

I'm not sure what kind of hell I've stumbled into but it would appear to contain a film starring Keith Chegwin and Tony Blackburn. With a riff on Kill Bill. Seriously.

No, seriously it's a real film starring Marc Pickering, Susannah Fielding, Joe Tracini and David Easter plus Keith Chegwin, Tony Blackburn, Joe Pasquale, Russell Grant and is directed by Andy Thompson.

[REC] was an incredible film, I loved it to bits. Truth be told though I wasn't that impressed with [REC]2, it was basically been there, done that but with less scares.

So it's good to see that with [REC]3 they're branching out a little and going a slightly different route. That route being a wedding celebration that turns very, very nasty. Chainsaw nasty.

Great actor. Great director. That would be Clint Eastwood in case you were wondering. Case in point, here's the new trailer for his latest, J.Edgar.

Steeped in melodrama and boasting potential Oscar winning performances, this one is going to be a must watch. Well for me anyway.

The Thing Red Band Trailer

I'm surprised. Very, very surprised. It takes a lot to impress me, or even get me that interested when you mentioned remake, or reboot as the kids like to call it these days. But this has my attention.

Now even though The Thing is technically not a remake (although it really is) it's basically the same world as John Carpenters classic and the latest trailer unashamedly shows this.

I'm still not over it. I'm still bitterly angry at the changes that have been applied to the original Star Wars trilogy. All I want, is to watch the films I fell in love with back as a child in today's current technology.

I can't do this yet. I have to re-watch my original DVD's upscaled and the viewing now turns sour knowing that they aren't available on Blu Ray when they should be.

Ghostbusters 3. Nobody really seems to want to do it, especially the main draw Bill Murray, but stories forever keep appearing. This time it's Sigourney Weaver letting slip more details.

To be fair to her though, she doesn't sound overly enthusiastic, and seems to possibly hint that it'll all fall by the wayside anyway.

Do not adjust your eyes, you read it right the first time, Postman Pat is indeed coming to a big screen near you very soon. Fireman Sam, sadly, is still nowhere to be seen.

Featuring voice talents from Rupert Grint, David Tennant, Stephen Mangan and Jim Broadbent Pat will find himself gaining world wide fame via an X-Factor style talent show.

The Awakening Trailer

Well there's not a whole heap of news around today it would seem but I have come across this rather spooky trailer for The Awakening.

I've a feeling this could be a fairly predictable affair with plenty of twists that you'll probably see coming but aesthetically it does have a good look and feel.

We Bought A Zoo Trailer

Cameron Crowe needs to bounce back after Elizabethtown. That's pretty much the opinion of most people who saw that movie. So to start with he's got a Pearl Jam documentary in the works. Excellent. And he's got We Bought A Zoo. Oh.

I was interested in seeing what the look and feel of this would be and after seeing the first trailer I'm disappointed.

Oh if only Steven Spielberg had come up with Star Wars. The man is a legend and even more so after speaking to the LA Times about tinkering with past films.

He and Lucas maybe bessie mates but their opinions on altering their previous films seems to be very different indeed. Oh and before you start screaming ET ... ET Special Edition, read the following first.

Indiana Jones 5 is one of those things that just doesn't want to go away. If it's not Shia Leboeuf talking about another instalment, then its the man himself, Harrison Ford, putting ideas in people's heads.

Ford has been speaking to the LA Times and inevitably the topic of a new Indy movies was raised. Click the jump to read what he's, albeit candidly, saying.

The Raid Trailer

Jesus Titty Fucking Christ. I've just watched one of the most awesome trailers I've seen in a fair while. Imagine a cross between Die Hard and Game Of Death and your pretty close.

This doesn't come from Hollywood but rather Indonesia and boy, they haven't scrimpt on the violence. This is a red band trailer so you have been warned, there's some really harsh stuff contained throughout.

Old classics getting cinema runs in their shiny, new digital format? YES PLEASE! First Back To The Future, then Jurassic Park and now Ghostbusters.

How cool is that? Apparently I was taken to see Ghostbusters when I was a child but I have no memory of this. It's been told that I was very scared of the Stay Puft Marshmallow man. I still am.

Good god the reboots keep coming and its Highlander's turn this time. Summit Entertainment have got the rights to this one and are actively looking for a director.

A script has apparently been completed by Art Macum and Matt Holloway, who worked on Iron Man, with an update by Melissa Rosenberg of Twilight fame. Yes, Twilight.

Reboot, reboot, reboot. Every other story I seem to post these days all revolve around that particular word, to which I'm becoming rather agitated with.

Original ideas are out of the window and retreading familiar grounds seems to be the 'in' thing. No artistic merit behind this, it's purely to get people into the cinemas with names they know. Like Point Break.

Indiana Jones Meets ... Leia?

Here's a little gem I've stumbled upon. Seems there was an outake from Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom that involves Barbara Streisand and ..... Carrie Fisher.

Right out of left field this one. Seems Spielberg wanted to play a prank on Indy and what better way than to get whipped by Streisand. Yikes!

No this isn't a joke. Apparently Nike are to release the same brand of self-lacing trainer that Marty McFly used in Back To The Future.

Last time I checked this wasn't 2015 so I think it's fair to say that Nike are way ahead of the game. Who cares though when you could own a pair of trainers this cool!

Review: Trollhunter (12A) ★★★★

Plot
A group of students investigate a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.

Review
Since The Blair Witch Project, faux documentaries are now common place in mainstream cinema, readily gobbled up by eager and hungry movie goers.

Poor old Cillian Murphy, after *spoiler alert* surviving 28 Days Later he now finds himself up against yet another pandemic. Or does he?

Retreat looks to tell the tale of a couple who head away to a remote island for some alone time after a family tragedy only to come across Jamie Bell's solider who tells them that a deadly disease is sweeping the nation. Crumbs.

Random sort of news this morning regarding a potential Bettlejuice reboot. Yes they're saying reboot because of course remakes just isn't the cool thing to do and lacks originality. Schyeah, right.

Well the guy who's just written Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the Tim Burton (Ah a connection!) Dark Shadows film looks to have moving forward with the reboot.

They only appeared for a fleeting couple of minutes in the first film but for the sequel they'll have much more substantial screen time. Yes Arnie and Bruce Willis are signed on for The Expendables 2.

It was really only a matter of time before this was announced but its still nice to get some solid confirmation now.

American Reunion Teaser Trailer

Although the trailer doesn't actually show any footage from the film, or even any footage at all, I still think this is a really good little trailer for a film I initially wasn't interested in.

What basically amounts to a montage of camera booth shots we get a look at our old friends from the first few American Pie films. You know what, this worked for me.

Although he's famous for being a horror master it turns out that John Carpenter initially got into films to do westerns. Who knew?

He didn't do bad for himself in the horror and sci/fi genres (lets just all forgot Ghosts Of Mars) but here's what the legend said on his western ideas.
