It would appear Neo himself, Keanu Reeves, has passed on what could have been a huge, and I mean HUGE, role by leaving the Akira movie adaptation.
That's Akira. Probably the most famous and well known of the all the anime stuff (and there's lots) out there. Its a big decision but somehow feels right.
That isn't a pop at Keanu, I think he's good at what he does, I just think certain projects are beyond him (see Bram Stokers Dracula for indisputable proof) and this could have been just one of those.
With Reeves turning this down there was rumours that Warner Bros were to can the whole thing. This was their response
"Production on ‘Akira’ has not halted or been shut down, as the film has not yet been greenlit and is still very much in the development stage. The exploratory process is crucial to a project of this magnitude, and we will continue to sculpt our approach to making the best possible film."
