Inexcusably they were initially released as the theatrical versions only, this was purely and quite cynically a money making act by the studio which didn't go down well. Had they been talking to George Lucas perhaps?
Luckily a lot of people ignored the initial release instead waiting for these extended editions to come out and I really think that because of this it's the reason we have them so soon.
